This all-female quartet has created a dramatically dark song with ‘Billie Holiday’ that is incredibly haunting and creepy, but I can’t stop listening.  From the moment the song starts with a lone acoustic guitar a palpable eeriness is present – it brings to mind an image of walking in the woods alone with fresh snow falling, but feel free to insert your own mysterious cliché movie scene.  This eeriness only increases when the chorus comes in.  The soft, communal, letter-by-letter articulation of the title’s namesake seems to be more of a ritualized summoning of the late Jazz singer’s spirit than an homage – a sensation heightened by the transition to a dramatically altered version of the classic Motown hit, “My Guy”.  If I haven’t completely frightened you by now, download it and give it a listen.
